Attention-deficit/Hyperactivity disorder has become one of the most common disorders
in childhood that more than often lasts into adulthood. The CDC has posted an article explaining
what ADHD is. The writer goes over the context of the issue and everything surrounding ADHD.
There is also an intended audience that they are trying to reach and a relationship they are trying
to build. Finally, there is the tone of the writer and the word choices the writer makes.
The CDC shows the signs, symptoms, types, causes, diagnosis, and treatment types of
ADHD. Before reading the article and being fully informed many people only know that ADHD
is mainly found in children that are super hyper and that have a hard time staying still and
focused. Now they can identify different types of ADHD and how they are presented. As well as
ways it can be managed. They are also able to see causes of ADHD like brain injury, low birth
weight, premature delivery as well as many other factors (CDC, 2022). One thing that can now
be raised about this topic is earlier intervention and management for children and even adults.
With having access to information about this people can be more aware of what to look for. As
with anything in the world there are always larger debates discussions and controversy going on.
There have been studies done on ADHD by Amy Glasofer and Catherine Dingley that have
shown that 66.7% of studies noted that African American children were less likely to be
diagnosed than Caucasian children to be diagnose with ADHD, and 65% were less likely to
discontinue medication (Katzman M, Higgins N, Glasofer A, et al., 2022). With children not
taking the medication and not getting treatment their education at the least could be at stake and
adults that suffer could be at stake of having a hard time functioning in the workplace.
Although it might have been unintentional the CDC had an intended audience. They
wrote the site geared towards adults like teachers and parents and others that are seeking
information on the subject. The article is easy enough to understand as a child, but it was written
in context of being for adults to read and collect information. The type of information that is in
the article shows that they are trying to create a relationship of trust and education with anyone
who reads the article. Though as stated before the are assuming that the reader are adults with
children or are people like teachers and other educators that are looking for information about
ADHD focusing mainly on children that suffer.
The writer of the article uses ethos and logos which is ethics and logic to appeal to the
audience. In most writing it is ethos, pathos, and logos although in this article there is no pathos
with is emotions. The writer shows ethos by using the ADHD International Consensus Statement
which was evidence-based information as well as providing other sources of information they
didn’t know about, which shows ethics like credibility and not plagiarizing. They also show
logos by puting the article in a chronological order. As well as separating all parts into different
categories like sign and symptoms, types, causes, diagnosis, treatment, managing symptoms,
getting help, ADHD in adults, and more information and explaining them in detail versus in very
little to no detail. The writer speaks in a clear, formal, and informational tone throughout the
article. They make sure to avoid race and gender in the article and only talk about general
information regarding ADHD. They do not stereotype or use specialized terms or slang in the
article.
Even as ADHD is brought more into light, we still don’t know everything about it. We do
know that it is one of the most common childhood disorders in the world. Approximately 9.4%
of children between the ages of two and seventeen were diagnosed with ADHD in 2016, and the
CDC estimates the number of children diagnosed that year was 6.1 million (Block R, Macdonald
N, et al., 2022). The CDC articles writer talks about the context of the issue, and everything
related to ADHD, knows their target audience, and shows the type of relationship they are trying
to build with that reader. Finally, they also watch the tone they use as well and the language that
is used.
